Note of the author: What follows are weighted sample percentages, when available. All data should be taken with care, since the sample distributions by education and other socio-demographic variables in some countries, may diverge substantially from their respective population distributions.
The question about confidence in the Government is traditionally asked in the Latinobarómetro and the World Values Survey. The question is not asked alone but within a battery of questions on confidence in different institutions and persons.
Wording is like this:
World Values Survey:
"I am going to name a number of organisations. For each one, could you tell me how much confidence you have in them: is it a great deal of confidence, quite a lot of confidence, not very much confidence or none at all?: The Government"
Latinobarómetro:
Please look at this card and tell me how much confidence you have in each of the following groups, institutions or persons mentioned on the list: a lot, some, a little or no confidence?: Government
The possible answers are:
1 A great deal / A lot of confidence2 Quite a lot / Some confidence3 Not very much / Little confidence4 None at all / No confidence at all
As usual with this sort of scaled questions, we have defined an index in the following terms:
Confidence index= %(A great deal/Quite lot)-%(Not very much/None at all)+100
Indexes such as these are very dependent on the time of the survey because of governments change over time in most countries. At the end of this document you can find the times series with the information about the source and year of the survey.
